Upcoming Local Events from PPJC

The following is a list of upcoming events being put on by the good folks of the Peninsula Peace and Justice Center. Feel free to attend any of these events if you’re interested, and check out their website for more details. Flyers for these events will be posted on Peace Club’s bulletin board later this week.

  • Eyewitness: Venezuela — On a recent trip to Venezuela, Vic and Barby Ulmer led a delegation that met with members of rural and urban co-ops, visited cooperative factories, explored Venezuela’s new housing initiative, and spoke with academics, human rights activists, health officials, and a representative from the Petroleum Institute. Catch up with the latest developments on the ground in Venezuela from a grassroots perspective. This report back will feature video of the delegation trip. Dedicated to bringing the realities of the “third world” and the richness of diverse cultures to North Americans, our developing world provides teacher training and materials, programs for community groups and classes, and reality tours.

  • Cowboy Republic: Six Ways the Bush Gang Has Defied the Law A new book by Marjorie Cohn, President, National Lawyers GuildCowboy Republic describes the six most important ways the Bush Administration has weakened the rule of law. Marjorie Cohn explains what we can do to remedy the administrations’ breaches of statutory, constitutional, and international law, including political and legal remedies. Marjorie Cohn lectures throughout the world and provides legal and political commentary on human rights and U.S. foreign policy for CBS News, Court TV, BBC, CNN, MSNBC, Fox News, NPR, Air America, and Pacifica Radio.

    Her talk and book signing will be on Friday, October 12 at 7:300 PM at the Unitarian Universalist Church at 505 East Charleston Road, Palo Alto. A $7-$15 suggested donation is collected at the door.

  • Rooting and Uprooting: Cultural and Political Landscapes in Israel/Palestine Presented by Devorah Brous, BUSTAN Founder, and Ra’ed Al-Mickawi, BUSTAN Director. BUSTAN is a partnership of Jewish and Arab eco-builders, architects, academics, and farmers promoting social and environmental justice in Israel/Palestine.

    Devorah and Ra’ed will discuss the political ecology of the Negev and help us recognize what is unrecognized in this marginalized part of Israel — an area populated by Jews and Bedouin. How can environmentally-conscious development projects remap the current plan for development of the Negev, which is irreversibly impacting landscape and ancient desert cultures? What can we do to catalyse and steward a healthy and sustainable connection with the land and all of its people? Come and Learn about BUSTAN (which means ‘orchard’ in Hebrew and Arabic) and the Negev Unplugged Grassroots Advocacy Project.

    This presentation will be on Sunday, October 14 at 7:00 PM at the Fellowship Hall of the First Baptist Church at 305 North California Avenue, Palo Alto. A $5-$15 suggested donation is collected at the door.

  • Dahr Jamail, Independent Journalist presents his new book Beyond the Green Zone: Dispatches from an Unembedded Journalist in Occupied Iraq — Dahr Jamail is an independent journalist who has covered the Middle East for more than four years. He reported extensively from inside Iraq for eight months, and has also reported from Syria, Turkey, Lebanon, and Jordan. Jamail writes for the Inter Press Service, Asia Times, and many other outlets. His reports have been published in The Nation, the Sunday Herald, the Guardian, Foreign Policy in Focus, and The Independent, among other publications. On radio as well as television, Jamail has reported for Democracy Now! and numerous other programs stations around the globe.

    His lecture and book signing will be on Sunday, November 11th at 7:00 PM at the Fellowship Hall of the First Baptist Church at 305 North California Avenue, Palo Alto. A $7-$15 suggested donation is collected at the door.
