Peace Club Events for the Rest of September

Hello to all Peace Club Members,

There are a number of upcoming Peace Club activities, many of which are new, last-minute announcements.

First off, we will be having a Peace Club Meeting this Wednesday, September 19th in room 172 at lunch. This will be billed as a mandatory meeting so that we can get the word out on everything that’s coming up and to get volunteers. Please be sure to come!

This Friday (the 21st) is going to be Aragon’s annual Club Fair at lunch. At this event, almost all of the clubs get a table which is spread out through center court where we share information about the club and get people to sign up–we got a lot of new members last year through this event! Unfortunately, due to bad communication, I only just found out about this today. It would be great if we could have as many Peace Club members as possible to help out and show ourselves off, plus it will be great practice for our upcoming series of counter-recruitments. We will be discussing more about this at Wednesday’s meeting.

This Friday is also the International Day of Peace as recognized by the United Nations. We will be participating in a peace march organized by Declaration of Peace-San Mateo County. We will be meeting in Central Park on the corner of 5th Ave. and San Mateo Drive (actually the area slightly east of there, just off of the tennis courts). The Peninsula Raging Grannies will lead us in a couple of songs, followed by a reading of the Bay Area dead from the war in Iraq, and then we will march through downtown San Mateo, which will end in Central Park. I did a similar march back in March, which was a lot of fun! Feel free to bring signs advocating peace, and candles. However, I’m hoping that a number of Peace Club members can turn out to show that yes, we as high school students do care and are here to support peace. If you can, please come by and look for the black and red Peace Club banner! (The whole event will probably end sometime between 8 PM and 8:30 PM, and it ends at Central Park.)

Finally, next Wednesday, September 26th, will be our first Military Counter-Recruitment as we hand out pamphlets next to the Army, except ours will be reasons NOT to join the military, etc. I’ll bring some samples to the 9/19 meeting, along with information for whoever will be responsible for setting up and cleaning up. So far, only the Army has contacted the office about recruiting on campus, and they’ll be on campus on the 4th Wednesday of every month. Who knows? Maybe we’ve scared all the others off (*wink*)!

Hope to see you all at as many of these events as you can come to! Thanks for your continued support of the Peace Club!
–Douglas Bell
